5 Things to do on Earth Day 2022

Posted by Jackson Bulman on

For the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day we have come up with 5 things you can do at home to make a difference.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on the 22nd April each year to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, this year is the 52nd anniversary of the international event. The theme for Earth Day this year is climate change, one of the most pressing environmental topics today. We have come up with a list of 5 different ways that you can celebrate Earth Day 2022 at home. Challenge yourself today to tick off as many items from the list as you can.

5 things to do on Earth Day 2022

1. Care and Repair
One of the best ways to celebrate our planet, and protect nature, is to care for and repair our items of clothing and outdoor gear. Keeping your outdoor gear and clothing in good shape, by storing it correctly and taking the time to maintain it, can increase the lifecycle of products enormously. The longer you use your product, the more you are helping to reduce your environmental impact, by not purchasing a new product which leaves another, similar impact. Care and repair

What you can do today: Take a few minutes out of your day to unpack your tent, or another outdoor item of gear, and properly care for and repair it at home. Whether that means stitching a patch into your favourite pair of outdoor trousers or sponging down your Kånken to get it ready for future adventures - make a change today!

 2. Recycle
Even though proper care and repair can significantly extend the lifecycle of our products there will come a time when the product reaches the end of its lifecycle. At that point it is important to recycle, recycle, recycle. Nowadays, there are so many ways to do that - we can turn old items, or parts of old items, into new things to enjoy. And when you are looking to purchase a new item of clothing why not consider the source of the material you are choosing? For example, there are some great products created out of recycled material available to purchase. Check out the items made with re-wool for example.

What you can do today: Clean out your closet and donate or repurpose your old clothes today.

3. Conserve
One of the biggest mistakes we make when thinking about the environment and our role in protecting our planet is to think that any change, we make is too small. The biggest changes start at home, and we can all reduce our footprint on our planet by changing some simple habits to protect resources. To reduce our consumption of water we can reduce our showering time, turn off the tap when we are cleaning our teeth, only turn on the dishwasher when it is full or wash our clothes less and air dry more. To reduce our electricity wastage, we can unplug appliances at night, turn off things not in use and turn off the lights when we leave a room or during daylight hours. There are so many more ways to reduce our footprint on the planet. Just take a few minutes to think about some habits that could be easily changed within your daily routine.

What you can do today: Challenge yourself to conserve resources in as many ways as you can during your daily routine today. Keep track and change your habits for the future.

4. Volunteer
Another great way to celebrate Earth Day is to volunteer your time or skills to an organisation which is working on different ways to protect our planet. There are so many organisations out there that already have established initiatives and constantly look for volunteer support. One such example is a city or beach clean-up. An organisation we recently worked with was Take 3 for the Sea, who are always looking for volunteers to take part in local clean ups, or to arrange one in your own local area.  5. Educate
Another way to make an impact is to educate yourself and others about climate change and environmental issues that matter to you. There is a wealth of information available online. What you can do today: Pass it on, send this article to one other person to raise awareness about Earth Day and learn what they can do today to make a difference.
